Volleyball Stumbles at Home

Honolulu, HI (September 6, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific volleyball team (3-2) lost 3-1 (23-25, 17-25, 25-22, 24-26) to visiting Western Oregon University (4-1) at St. Andrew's Priory as a part of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts HPU challenge. The Sea Warriors were paced by Sanoe Recca, who had 15 kills.

The Sea Warriors looked to be in control in the first set, HPU led 22-18 on a dump by Pihanakealoha Kea. However, HPU helped the Wolves with five hitting errors down the stretch. HPU, maybe shocked, did not answer the bell in the second set and found themselves down 15-5. HPU battled back, but fell behind two sets. HPU started hot in the third set to make things interesting. A Kasey Thompson kill gave HPU a 20-10 lead and the Sea Warriors would finish. In the final set HPU again had its chances, the Sea Warriors led 20-18 in the late stages but couldn't close.

Haley Doerfler was big for the Sea Warriors with 12 kills and a .450 hitting percentage. Kea passed out 32 assists as Chelsey Buyuan led with 18 digs. Amanda Moriarty and Makame Recca each also had double figure dig nights as well.

HPU is back in action tomorrow against St. Martin's University at 7 PM at St. Andrew's Priory.
