Volleyball Gets Back on Winning Track

Honolulu, HI (September 7, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific volleyball team started slow but caught fire midway through the match and trounced St. Martin's University 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-9). HPU extends its record to 4-2 while St. Martin's remains winless (0-2); the action was part of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts HPU Challenge at St. Andrew's Priory.

The first set ended up highly competitive, but the Sea Warriors started off in control leading 8-2. However, by the late stages, the set was tied at 23. Two errors on SMU and a Sanoe Recca kill gave HPU the set. The second set saw SMU jump out to a 10-4 lead, but soon the lead would evaporate as HPU took a 16-15 lead. The Sea Warriors would not look back. The third set was all green and blue, at one juncture HPU reeled off 10 straight points.

Samantha Rummans had a bounce back game with 12 kills on 28 swings and just four errors. Haley Doerfler had another huge match in what is shaping up to be a stellar sophomore campaign. She had six kills and seven block assists while hitting a robust .667. Doerfler is now hitting .402 on the season. Pihanakealoha Kea directed the offense, picking up a game-high 33 assists. Makamae Recca led the team with 12 digs as Chelsey Buyuan had 11.
