Volleyball Loses First Home Match

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (October 17, 2013) –Newly inducted Hawai'i Pacific University Hall of Famers, and volleyball alumnae, Nia Tuitele and Debbie Sant'Anna were in the building taking in tonight's match. The Sea Warriors could have used them in uniform. The HPU Volleyball Team (13-5, 7-3) fell to PacWest powerhouse California Baptist in three sets (13-6, 10-1) on Thursday night at St. Andrew's Priory (25-19, 25-18, 25-17).

"Physically I thought we were there, I thought we matched up well. But the team was not engaged at the emotional level that it takes to beat a quality team like California Baptist," said Head Coach Daryl Kapis.

The first set fit the mold of two conference heavyweights clashing. The set featured eight ties and three lead changes. The Sea Warriors held the lead early in the set several times, but couldn't get any separation. The set was knotted at 16 when the Lancers went on a 6-1 run to take a commanding 22-17 lead. HPU battled back to 23-19 on a Pomai Recca kill and a CBU hitting error, but the comeback would stop there.

CBU piled on to start the second set, taking a 6-2 lead. However, a Sea Warrior four-point flurry would tie the set at six. Soon after, CBU took a five-point lead at 13-8. The Lancers were not seriously challenged after that.

The third set saw the Lancers open up a lead early and add on to make it 16-9. A 5-0 Sea Warrior spurt brought HPU back to within two a 16-14. Just before the run, a disputed call sent the Priory into a frenzy and in hindsight could have tied the set. As it was though, CBU pulled away for the sweep.

HPU has a quick turnaround as it hosts Azusa Pacific tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's Priory.
