Men’s Soccer Fights But Falls

Box Score OAKLAND, CA (October 21, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (7-6-1, 5-3) lost its first game on the mainland road trip 3-2 against Holy Names University (4-9, 2-5) on Tuesday afternoon in Oakland.
 
The first minutes of the game presented an active and aggressive playing HNU team that was pushing hard for the lead. The Hawks had three shots and four corner kicks within the first ten minutes of the game. However, Jesse Kunitomo managed to keep his goal clean with three good saves early in the game.
 
It was HNU's PacWest scorer board leader Jaime Phillips who grabbed the lead for the Hawks by scoring his 13th goal of the season after a pass inside the box from the right side (18').
 
In the 41st minute, the Sharks' effort got rewarded with a penalty kick after a foul inside the box. Erik Kemsies took responsibility and tied the game again by converting the penalty kick.
 
Just minutes after the changeover (49'), Phillips, who finished with seven shots, scored his second goal of the day with a good shot following a pass through the HPU defense from the left side.
 
Jorge Vela answered promptly with a good shot hitting the post (52'). Sixty-six minutes in the game, it was Brais Garcia who tied the game again with another penalty kick goal. The Hawks' physically hard play resulted not only in two penalty kicks, but also in five yellow cards compared two just one for HPU.
 
In the final phase of the game, HPU and HNU fought an even match with chances for both teams.
 
In the 88th minute, Phillips made the hat trick complete, deciding the game with a powerful shot from inside the box.
 
The remaining two minutes were not enough for the Sharks to tie the game again, resulting in a 3-2 win for the Hawks.
 
The Hawks also led the statistics in shots (16–13) and shots on goal (8–5). Garcia, was led HPU's shot chart with three shots. Kunitomo finished the game with five saves.
 
The Sharks will play their next game on Thursday, October 23rd, against Dominican University of California in San Rafael, CA.
