Box Score FRESNO, CA (October 25, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (8-7-1, 6-4) celebrated a 2-1 double overtime victory against Fresno Pacific University (9-4, 7-2) on Saturday afternoon in California.
After losing the first two road games on this trip, the Sharks came out hungry against the Sunbirds. In the second minute,
Brais Garcia showed HPU's will to win with a good shot that went high.
Generally, the first period presented an even match between two excellent teams with a slight advantage in shots (3-2) for the Sharks.
The Sharks started the second period with an early goal (47').
William Komomua played a good pass to
Nahoa Salera who escaped the defense and grabbed the lead for HPU.
Following, both teams played active and managed to create chances. Sixty-three minutes in the game, a short pass found an open FPU player just outside the box who made it 1-1 with a powerful shot.
After the goal against, the Sharks tried everything to grab the lead again.
Christopher Campbell (67', 86') and
Jorge Vela (72') had good shots that were saved by the FPU goalie.
However, after no more goals in regular time, the teams were facing two tie breaking overtime periods.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Shark's effort finally paid off. It was
Daniel Haehre who brought the Sharks back to winning ways with an impressive shot from about 35 yards out early in the second overtime period (102').
"We played the way we were capable of tonight. It was a deserved win against an excellent team. We must learn how to treat every opponent like this. It is a little bittersweet knowing what we are capable of, but not always taking advantage of it," said Head Coach
Chris Fisher after the game. "I give our guys a lot of credit battling to win this game after a very long week."
The Sharks also led the statistics in shots (16-10) and shots on goal (9-2).
Jorge Vela led the way with four shots as
Mario Garcia had three. The Sunbirds' physically hard play resulted in 19 fouls compared to nine fouls on HPU.
The Sharks will now travel back to Oahu to play their next game against Chaminade University on Saturday, November 1st, at Atherton Field in Kaneohe. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30pm.
