Box Score HONOLULU, HI (October 25, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (11-8, 9-4) dropped visiting Dominican University (5-17, 3-11) in four sets (18-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-15) at St. Andrew's Priory on Saturday night in downtown Honolulu.
It was a strange match that saw each team win at least one set, yet no set was very close. HPU established a 12-6 lead in the first set but then inexplicably stumbled losing 12 of the next 13 points and ultimately the set.
"We weren't fully focused at the beginning of the match and we need to make sure that is something we avoid as we push forward the rest of the season," said Head Coach
Daryl Kapis.
From there, the Sharks got their bearings back and quickly dispatched of Dominican in the next three sets. The Penguins failed to break the 15 point mark in any of the next three sets.
The difference was in the hitting percentages, Dominican hit .069, -.037, and -.026 in the final three frames as HPU hit .476, .483, and .286 over the same time period.
"On a positive note, we hit over .300 (.322) again and that is a big deal," said Kapis.
Pomai Recca had a big night with 16 kills on a .429 hitting percentage.
Elizabeth Culpepper also was on fire with 13 kills and a .444 hitting percentage.
Tenika Wentworth led the team with 26 assists,
Marie Fujii added 13.
Amanda Moriarty had a game-high 15 digs while Recca added 10.
HPU returns to action on Thursday as Notre Dame de Namur comes to visit St. Andrew's Priory at 7:00 pm.
