Volleyball Extends Hot Streak to Nine Out of Ten

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (October 31, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (13-8, 11-4) wrapped up its eight-match home stand on Halloween night with a five-set win (25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 25-27, 15-8) over visiting Academy of Art (11-12, 6-9). HPU took seven of the eight matches on the home floor and has now won nine of the last ten matches dating back to October 5th.

HPU was as dominant as could be for a team that lost two sets. The Sharks came out guns blazing in the first set, building a 21-8 lead before outlasting the Urban Knights for the win.

Art U, playing its second five-set match in as many days, reduced HPU's hitting percentage by .344 points (.452-.108) in the second set on its way to tying the match.

HPU reverted to its set one form in the third set, hitting .444. The Sharks established and 19-10 lead and didn't look back.

The fourth set was the most competitive of the match with 10 ties and five lead changes. HPU had a chance to end the match in four, but a service error on match point gave Art U new life and it took advantage.

The fifth set was devoid of drama; HPU jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never was challenged.

"It was great to get really pushed and get the win. Art U is a good team and we needed this before our big road trip," said Head Coach Daryl Kapis.

HPU looked good on that stat sheet, winning hitting percentage (.275-.124) and blocks (12-3).

Haley Doerfler, playing in her second-to-last home match, was amazing with 15 kills, a .583 hitting percentage and 3.5 blocks. Elizabeth Culpepper (17), Pomai Recca (14), and Kasey Thompson (11) all also had double-figure kills. Tenika Wentworth had a game-high 43 assists as Amanda Moriarty led everyone with 25 digs.

The Sharks now head to the mainland for a three-game road swing beginning at Point Loma on November 5th.
