HONOLULU, HI (November 16, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Basketball Team found minutes for everyone on the roster in Sunday's 83-77 exhibition loss to St. Katherine College.
All 15 Sharks on the roster saw action in the tune-up for next weekend's PacWest/GNAC Challenge.
Exhibition or not, St. Katherine was much better than the team that HPU beat by 17 points in the HPU Classic last season.
SKC, now in its second season of basketball, took the lead at the 12:02 mark of the first half and held it for the rest of the period. HPU battled to keep the deficit in single digits all half, and trailed by five points at the break after a basket by
Luke Hager with two seconds to play.
HPU put together a 12-3 run early in the second half to take a 49-47 lead (14:57). The visitors reclaimed the lead, but
John Horowitz answered with a layup to give the Sharks the advantage at 53-52 with 13:34 to play. The Firebirds continued their red hot shooting to take back the lead and grow the advantage. With just 1:10 to play, HPU trailed 79-67 but closed with a furious rally. HPU's 8-2 run in the final minute, including five points from
Justin Long, was stopped only by the clock.
Hager was again impressive for the Sharks; the Division I transfer scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Darry Jones Jr. scored 19 points on 7-11 shooting from the floor. Long hit two three-pointers on his way to 10 points. Horowitz was a model of efficiency, scoring seven points in seven minutes of action.
HPU returns to regular season action on Friday night as it plays Seattle Pacific in a neutral site game at BYU-Hawaii at 5:00 pm.
