Sea Lions Escape Sharks in Five Sets

Box Score

SAN DIEGO (November 5, 2014) - The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Volleyball Team fell to Point Loma in five sets (25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12) Wednesday night.

The loss is an unfortunate start to the four-game road trip where HPU plays four of the PacWest's top teams. HPU (11-5, 13-9) falls back into fifth place in the PacWest while Loma (13-4, 16-9) solidifies their third place standing with their fourth consecutive win. The loss snaps HPU's own winning streak which stood at six games.

The first set was easily the most indecisive of the five. The teams battled back and forth counting for 16 tie scores and three lead changes. HPU battled back late after being down 18-15 to tie the game, but just didn't have enough to pull out the win.

The second set was all HPU as the ladies jumped out to an early 8-3 lead and never looked back. Elizabeth Culpepper was a force putting away six kills in the set. The Sharks hit for a ridiculous .452 hitting percentage to even the match.

Set three was another close affair but HPU just couldn't hold on after starting hot with a 5-2 lead. After Loma tied the game at 14, it took the lead one last time for the win. Neither team hit the ball well in the set, Loma hit .175 while HPU hit just .140.

The fourth set was intense as both sides traded blows to start the game. After the Sharks established a 16-11 lead, the Sea Lions came back to bring the game within one point. However, HPU held firm and forced a fifth set.

The fifth set saw HPU fight to the end, but was just not be able to pull out the win. After trailing 7-6 HPU gave up three straight points (10-6) and ended up losing the match 15-12.

The Sharks were led offensively by sophomore Pomai Recca who had 18 kills and by Haley Doerfler who hit .391 with just one error. Amanda Moriarty had a game-high with 34 digs while Tenika Wentworth led HPU with 43 assists.

The Sharks move on to face Cal Baptist on November 6th at 7:00 pm PST at Van Dyne Gym in Riverside, CA.
