Box Score HONOLULU, HI (December 20, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (7-2) manhandled Montana State Billings (1-10) on Friday night at the Neal Blaisdell Center by the score of 73-45.
What ended up as a blowout, started as a close game. The visiting Yellow Jackets stung the Sharks early, earning leads of 6-2 and 8-4. Back-to-back baskets by
Colfax Nordquist and
Justin Long tied the game at eight with 14:31 left in the opening half. MSUB briefly regained the lead about a minute later, but
Darry Jones Jr. put the Sharks ahead for good with a pair of free throw hits at the 13:19 mark.
When
Luke Hager got to the basket with 6:46 to go in the opening half, HPU attained its first double-figure lead at 27-16. HPU added on three more points to the advantage to lead 38-24 at the halfway point.
HPU came out hot to start the second half, in the first 1:16 Nordquist and Long each buried three-pointers to give the Sharks a 20 point cushion. From there, HPU's lead was never under 20 points.
It was a complete team effort with all 12 active Sharks seeing time, 10 HPU players saw at least 14 minutes with no one getting more than 26.
HPU converted 26-51 (51%) field goals while limiting Billings to 19-60 (31.7%). The Sharks also dominated on the glass, wining that battle 42-28.
Hager led the way with another double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds). Long continued his great play of late with 16 points, including four three-pointers.
John Horowitz was a force off the bench, adding 11 points. Jones Jr. played facilitator, passing out five assists.
The Sharks are back in action on Sunday (12/21) as they host NAIA Ottawa University (Kansas) at 2:00 pm at the Neil Blaisdell Center.
