Box Score HONOLULU, HI (December 6, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (4-2, 1-1) beat UH Hilo (4-4, 0-2) 70-65 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
Darry Jones Jr. got a tip-in to go early in the overtime period to give HPU a two point lead.
Clayton Guy then made two sets of free throws to put HPU up five. It was HPU's defense that set up the offense as UH Hilo was held without a field goal for the first 4:39 of overtime.
Justin Long answered that Vulcan score by hitting two foul shots with 19 seconds left to ice the game for HPU.
The second half was hotly contested, especially late; the game saw three tie scores in the final 2:39. With the score knotted at 61,
Luke Hager got to the foul line and split a pair to give HPU the lead. UH Hilo's Darius Johnson-Wilson was fouled with 31 seconds left and he also only hit one of his foul shots to retie the score. Both teams got one more possession but each failed to score sending the game to extra time.
The first half belonged to the Sharks as HPU led for 18 of the 20 minutes. The half remained close however; HPU's biggest lead was nine points when Jones Jr. hit a foul shot at the 3:31 mark.
The Sharks outshot the visitors in all three areas and out rebounded the competition by 10. HPU was minus 10 in the turnover differential which allowed the Vulcans to stay close.
Hager again led the Sharks in scoring with 24 points to go with his eight rebounds. Jones Jr. was excellent with 14 points and game-highs in rebounds (10) and assists (5).
The two teams will renew acquaintances next Saturday in a rematch in Hilo.
