Box Score AZUSA, CA (February 15, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (12-10, 7-9) dropped a road contest to Azusa Pacific (13-9, 9-7) by the score of 81-74 on Saturday night.
The Sea Warriors did a great job taking care of the basketball, only turning it over 11 times, but cold shooting doomed HPU. The Sea Warriors converted just 37.5% (21-56) of their attempts as host APU made half (26-52) of its shots from the floor.
Azusa Pacific led the entire game, and by as many as 16 points, but HPU was in striking distance late in the contest.
Darry Jones Jr. provided an old fashion three-point play with :58 left to get HPU to within four points at 71-67. After a pair of Cougar foul shots,
Malte Ziegenhagen answered with two free throws of his own to return the deficit to four. APU was again clutch at the line, knocking down a pair of free throws but
Justin Long kept the pressure on by hitting a layup with :23 left to make it 75-71. Like clockwork, the Cougars executed their foul shots to re-extend the lead to six. Ziegenhagen got HPU to within three as he was fouled shooting from deep, but time ran out on HPU.
Long and Ziegenhagen tied for a game-high 24 points.
Farbod Farman posted a team-high seven rebounds.
HPU wraps up the road trip on Monday in Riverside against Cal Baptist.
