Men’s Basketball Clinches Spot in PacWest Tourney

Box Score HONONLULU, HI (February 22, 2014)—The Hawai`i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (13-11, 7-10) clinched a berth into the Pacific West Tournament with a 64-51 win over Notre Dame de Namur (7-17, 6-12) on Saturday night. This is the second straight year the Sea Warriors will play in the PacWest postseason.

With the sixth seed on the line, HPU jumped out to an early seven-point lead just six minutes into the game. The Argonauts cut the lead to as little as three, but a Malte Ziegenhagen three-pointer before the break gave HPU a 28-22 advantage at the break.

After a low scoring first half, things picked up in the second frame.

The Argos quickly cut the HPU lead to one, but a 7-0 run pushed the lead back to eight with 14:43 remaining in the second half. The Sea Warrior's lead fluctuated between three and eight points for much of the next eight minutes until Ziegenhagen found an open John Hororwitz who buried a three-pointer from the corner with 6:05 remaining.

Horowitz' three-pointer pushed HPU's lead to double-digits, where it would stay for most of the remainder of the game, as Ziegenhagen went 4-4 from the line in the final 66 seconds to ice the game.

Ziegenhagen led the way with a game-high 21 points while also contributing a game-high four assists. Darry Jones Jr. had a superb all-around game with 12 points along with a game-high eight rebounds.

The Sea Warriors return to action on February 24th in what will be the last home game for seniors Farbod Farman and Leif Rodney. They will face Fresno Pacific at the Neal Blaisdell Center at 6:30 p.m.
