Nationally Ranked CBU Escapes with Win

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (February 3, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (12-7, 7-6) went toe-to-toe with 14th ranked California Baptist (19-1, 13-1) but fell 83-72 in the late stages.

The 11-point margin of defeat doesn't tell the entire story, with 1:39 to play HPU just trailed by four points at 68-64. However, outstanding foul shooting from the Lancers prevented HPU from pulling any closer.

CBU went 30-33 (90.9%) from the charity stripe and although HPU also did well at the line (17-22, 77.3%) the difference may have meant the game. The Sea Warriors excelled defensively, limiting CBU to a 22-57 (38.6%) shooting night from the field.

With just eight minutes to play, Leif Rodney scored down low to give HPU a three-point advantage, but the upset bid was not to be.

Justin Long led HPU with 18 points; Malte Ziegenhagen was just behind him with 17. Farbod Farman again registered double-figures with 11 points to go with his seven rebounds. Rodney secured a game-high eight rebounds.

The Columbia Blue and Kelly Green now embark on a four-game road trip, starting at BYU-Hawaii on Friday night. HPU then invades Southern California where it will get a rematch with Cal Baptist on February 17th.
