Men’s Basketball Comes up Short in Semifinal

Box Score SAN DIEGO, CA (March 7, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (15-13) lost today to Dominican University (22-7) by a score of 83-69 in the Pacific West Conference Tournament semifinal.

The game started off on a high note as Justin Long drilled a three-pointer to open the scoring. The teams then exchanged baskets for the first six minutes of the game. Long hit another jumper at the 14:07 mark to give the Sea Warriors a 14-13 advantage. However, Dominican found its rhythm and regained the lead. The Penguins found themselves on the right side of the scoreboard for the rest of the afternoon. A buzzer-beating tip in gave the second-seeded Penguins a 42-29 lead at the half.

The deficit ballooned to 23 points by the 16:23 mark of the second half. HPU wasn't finished yet, down 63-43, HPU responded with a 15-5 run to pull to within 10 points on a Darry Jones Jr. three-ball with 5:31 to play. A comeback wasn't in the cards for the Sea Warriors on this day, who played a very physical game the day before.

HPU featured a well-rounded attack with four starters scoring in double-figures. Leif Rodney and Long each posted 15 points to pace the Sea Warriors. Rodney, playing in his final collegiate basketball game, recorded a game-high nine rebounds as Long dished out a team-high five assists. Malte Ziegenhagen (10) and Jones Jr. (11) rounded out the double-digit scorers. Center Farbod Farman just missed another double-double with eight points and eight rebounds to go with three swats.

The Sea Warriors' season is now over, a season that featured the first over .500 record since 2009-2010 and the first win the PacWest Conference Tournament.
