The first half was something that both teams might like to forget. Almost five minutes into the game, HPU led 4-2. Nearly halfway through the period (10:41), there was no offense to speak of as the teams were deadlocked at eight. HPU came to life over the next five minutes and went on a 10-0 run capped by a lay in by
Colfax Nordquist. However, FPU fought back and whittled the lead down to two points at the half (18-16).
The home team was held to 6-28 (21.4%) shooting for the opening half while HPU also forced 11 turnovers.
Whatever was said by the HPU coaches at the break needs to be written down and remembered. The Sharks caught fire in the second half making 15-24 attempts (62.5%) and a game-changing 8-10 (80%) from three-point land.
The HPU lead stood at three points with 17:03 to play, then a 13-3 run by HPU put the Sharks in control. The run featured three three-pointers (
Connor Looney,
Justin Long, and
John Horowitz). HPU led by double-figures for most of the second half, but FPU made a late push.
The Sunbirds trimmed the deficit to three points with 1:40 left, but Long was clutch at the line sinking 5-6 foul shots down the stretch to preserve the win.
Long posted a game-high 18 points, including three long balls to go with three assists.
Darry Jones Jr. registered 12 points on 5-10 shooting. Horowitz came off the bench to nail three deep balls for nine total points.
