Women’s Hoops Opens Season with Convincing Win

Box Score ELLENSBURG, Wash. (November 13, 2015)—Aminata Cole's double-double effort buoyed the Hawaii Pacific women's basketball team's 87-68 victory over Concordia (Ore.) University in the Central Washington Crossover at the Central Washington University arena.
 
Cole, a junior forward, racked up a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds, while teammate Breanna Mackenzie poured in 22 points and added seven rebounds and six assists. Junior guard Brianne Yasukochi posted 16 points, five rebounds and six assists to contribute to the convincing victory.
 
HPU, which finished a program-best 25-5 last season and made it to the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, shot 50.7 percent from the field and out-rebounded the opposition 48-30.
 
The Sharks (1-0), winners of last season's PacWest postseason tournament, also won the points-in-the-paint battle, 48-26. HPU converted 42.9 percent of its 3-point shot attempts (9-for-21), but made just 10 of 20 free-throw tries.
 
The Cavaliers (0-1) were led by Sierra Dean's 18 points and seven assists from Briannah Smith.
 
HPU heads back to the hardwood on Saturday to face tournament host Central Washington at 1 p.m. Hawaii time. The Sharks return to Oahu on Nov. 17 to face Alaska Anchorage in their home opener at Moanalua High School at 4:30 p.m.
