Box Score HONOLULU (November 20, 2015)—As the Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball season winds down, the squad appears poised to finish the campaign on a high note.
The Sharks won their second consecutive match, a 25-21, 18-25, 27-25, 25-11 triumph over visiting UH Hilo in a PacWest Conference matchup at Saint Andrew's Priory.
HPU (15-12, 10-9 PacWest) received a match-high 15 kills apiece from seniors
Elizabeth Culpepper and
Kasey Thompson, the latter of whom is playing through a painful knee injury. Setter
Tenika Wentworth notched 47 assists and
Pomai Recca posted 13 kills. Senior defensive specialist
Amanda Moriarty added 24 digs to spur the victory.
The Vulcans (11-11, 9-10) were led by Evelin Solyomvari's 11 kills. UH Hilo had the chance to tip the match's momentum in its favor after taking a 25-24 lead in the third frame, but surrendered three consecutive points to the Sharks, which won the pivotal set.
"We survived the heat," said HPU coach Daryl Kapis. "We dealt with the sweltering heat in the gym and overcame our game-three demonds that we've endured all season. Anytime you have three players with double-digit kills, you know it's a good night." HPU wraps up its season on Saturday, Nov. 21, against local rival Chaminade at Saint Andrew's Priory, with first serve set 6 p.m. After the match, the Sharks ohana will bid farewell to five departing seniors: Thompson, Culpepper,
Kara Wong,
Sophia Blaszyk and Moriarty.
