Men’s Basketball Earns Key Road Win

Box Score SAN DIEGO, CA (February 13, 2015) – Hawai'i Pacific's big three were outstanding in Thursday's key road win at Point Loma (18-6, 11-6). HPU Men's Basketball (14-8, 9-7) effectively used the three-pointer in pulling the 79-75 upset.

The first half was hotly contested with no team leading by more than six points. Both teams led by six at different points, but it was HPU that had the 40-34 lead at the break. The last two HPU baskets of the half were both three-pointers by Darry Jones Jr.; the senior guard carried the load in the first half by tallying 13 points.

The second half was a similar see-saw affair. The HPU lead was 53-46 after a long ball from Connor Looney. The home team responded with an 8-1 run to tie the game with 11:15 to go. Minutes later (7:13), Loma took its only lead of the second half on two free throw makes. Sixteen seconds later, HPU took the lead back for good on a three-pointer by Justin Long. Long then nailed another shot from distance to put HPU up five (64-59) with 6:01 to go. Long and Luke Hager continued to make plays in the final minutes and solid foul shooting led to the win.

With the win, the Sharks remain in control of the last spot in the PacWest Championship Tournament. HPU now leads Dominican by a game and a half and still trails Point Loma for fifth in the standings by a game and a half.

Long went 6-10 for the game, all of which were three-pointers, for a game-high total of 22. Jones Jr. and Hager each added 17 points and contributed seven and six rebounds, respectively.

As a team, the Sharks went 14-28 (50%) from behind the arc. Ten of the bombs came off the combined hands of Long and Jones Jr.

The Sharks are back in action on Saturday at Azusa Pacific.
