Box Score HONOLULU (September 18, 2015)—Behind a match-high 14 kills from senior outside hitter
Elizabeth Culpepper, the Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team defeated Concordia (Calif.) University Irvine 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 25-11) in the PacWest Conference opener for both squads at St. Andrew's Priory.
The Sharks (6-3, 1-0 PacWest) extended their winning streak to four matches and won a four-set affair for the first time in 2015—the five previous victories came via sweep. Freshman
Jacqueline Wolfe chipped in 13 kills on .600 hitting for HPU, while setter
Tenika Wentworth led the way with 46 assists.
"I'm glad we came back in the first game because we had that happen to us on the road last week," said HPU coach
Daryl Kapis. "I'm proud of the way we hit in the third game and in game four, we showed why we should be one of the top teams in the conference."
The opening set proved pivotal as the Sharks trailed for most of the frame, including a 23-21 deficit, but the squad stormed back with four consecutive points to go ahead 1-0. In the first stanza, Wolfe notched a perfect hitting percentage with five kills on as many attempts.
The Eagles (4-6, 0-1 PacWest) received 13 kills from Rachel Flynn, while Taylor Dennison posted a match-high 32 digs.
HPU returns to St. Andrew's Priory on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. to host Holy Names.
