HPU downed by Dixie State 4-1

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Dixie State's Darian McCloy scored a hat trick and picked up an assist in leading the Trailblazers past Hawai'i Pacific University 4-1 in PacWest Conference action on Monday afternoon at the Waipio Soccer Park.
 
Dixie State (6-5-0, 4-2-0) won its fourth straight game while the Sharks (2-8-1, 2-4-0) suffered its third straight loss in league play.
 
Dixie State took control of the match scoring three goals in six minutes in the first half and held on for the win.
 
McCloy scored her first goal in the 28th minute after a mishandled save allowed her to toe poke the ball into the net for a 1-0 advantage.
 
McCloy's second goal was just three minutes later when Trailblazer Kamie Hunter's shot was knocked away for a save, but ricocheted strait to the open McCloy who cashed it in in the 31st minute.
 
McCloy got her assist three minutes after that when she delivered a pass to Megan Spencer on a breakaway. Spencer scored the shot from 30 yards out.
 
McCloy got her hat trick goal in the 77th minute when she was able to steal a ball from a Shark defender in front of the goal and put it away.
 
HPU put a score up in the 83rd minute when drawing a DSU foul inside the 18-yard box.
 
Sophomore Noelle Mercado of Honolulu, Hawai'i/Kaiser converted the penalty kick for her third goal of the season.
 
HPU junior goalkeeper Alannah John of Sacramento, Calif./Ponderosa made nine saves in the first half before giving way to Lauren Spencer at halftime. The sophomore from Oxford, Mich./Oxford tallied two more saves for the Sharks.
 
DSU keeper Angelica Ciucci recorded two saves in the first half. Backup Felicity Tarr did not record a save in the second half of action.
 
The Sharks return to play on Saturday afternoon against California Baptist. The 3 p.m. contest is scheduled for Atherton Field in Kaneohe.
