WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University scored twice in the final 20 minutes to snap a five game winless streak by beating Chaminade 2-0 in a PacWest Conference game Saturday afternoon at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.
The Sharks (3-5-4, 3-3-2) collected their first victory since a 1-0 overtime win at Domincan (Calif.) on Sept. 24. Chaminade (5-5, 5-3) lost its second straight after a three game win streak. The win is another score for HPU toward Hawaii PacWest Cup.
HPU significantly outshot the Silverswords 22-4, but couldn't get one to the back of the net until the 71st minute when junior
Josch Cuerten of Cologne, Germany blasted a shot from 25 yards out.
The Sharks all but put it away four minutes later when the PacWest's leading scorer, junior
Sven Koenig, got loose thanks to passes from Cuerten and
Erik Kemsies to score in the 75th minute.
Kemsies, the 6-0 senior midfielder from Velgast, Germany, also assisted on the first goal. It was his first action in two games after sitting to nurse an injury. Koenig was a recipient of Kemsies return, as he didn't score a goal in the two games that Kemsies missed.
The Sharks dominated the contest, but their shots fell all around the goal and twice Koenig hit either the crossbar or a post.
HPU goalkeeper
Jesse Kunitomo recorded his first complete game shutout of the season. The senior from Mililani, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, collected two saves – one each half – on the four attempted CUH shots.
Silversword keeper Bernd Buescherhoff collected five saves in the Sharks barrage of the Chaminade goal.
HPU doesn't have long to enjoy the victory. The Sharks face Point Loma on Monday at the Waipio Soccer Park. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 12:30 p.m.
