HONOLULU — Hawai'i Pacific University's six-match win streak came to an end on Saturday night as California Baptist swept the Sharks 3-0 at James Castle Gym at St. Andrews Priory.
The Sharks (14-8, 10-3) fell out of a virtual first place tie, while CBU (16-5, 11-2) remained at the top with the 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 win.
"It wasn't the result that we wanted," said HPU coach
Jenic Tumaneng. "Cal Baptist was chosen to be the winner of the PacWest in the preseason and they showed it tonight. It just wasn't our night."
The Sharks hit just .079 as a team with 3.0 team blocks, while the Lancers hit .240 and tallied 12.0 team blocks.

Pomai Recca, the 5-9 outside hitter from Waimanalo, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, led the Sharks with 15 kills and 11 digs for her 16th double-double of the season. She also added three blocks.
CBU got 13 kills with 13 digs and five blocks from Lauren Hackett. Abbie Gortsema led both teams with eight blocks.
"They took advantage of every opportunities they had," said Tumaneng. "CBU executed better than we did tonight."
Cal Baptist started the first set with a 12-5 advantage before the Sharks roared back with a 9-2 run to tie the set at 14-all. After having ties at 15 and 17, the Lancers took command with a 4-0 run and held on for the 25-21 win.
The Sharks held two brief leads early in the second set, but a 7-1 Lancer run gave CBU the momentum they would carry throughout. HPU closed the gap to 19-16 late in the set when the Lancers picked up two more quick points to extend the lead to five and traded points on the way to a 25-20 win.
Cal Baptist took over the third set and crushed all HPU hopes. The Lancers used a pair of 4-0 runs to dominate the set and claim the match with a 25-16 win.
"We got some good things out of the match," said Tumaneng. "We'll go back to the practice court and work hard."
HPU drops to fourth by percentage points in the PacWest standings. Still the Sharks are just one game behind Concordia (12-2) and California Baptist (11-2) in the loss column, and virtually tied with Dominican (11-3).
The Sharks have about a week before getting back to action as they host Hawai'i-Hilo next Friday at 7 p.m., then Chaminade to close a nine-game homestand next Saturday at 6 p.m. at Castle Gym on the St. Andrew's campus.
