WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – BYU-Hawaii's Whitley Sargent scored a pair of goals as the Seasiders claimed a 3-0 victory over Hawai'i Pacific University Tuesday in PacWest Conference women's action at the Waipio Soccer Park.
The Sharks (2-6-1, 2-2-0) lost for just the second time in PacWest play, while the Seasiders (4-4-1, 3-2-0) won their second straight game.
BYUH got on the board midway through the first half when Sargent toed in the shot of Mackenzie Moore off of a corner kick by Kala Brundige in the 28th minute. Sargent's redirection of the shot sent the ball past HPU goal keeper junior
Alannah Johns who was diving in position to save the shot from Moore.
The 1-0 score held through halftime.
The game was still tight until the 66th minute when the Seasiders took advantage of HPU's deflection of an errant entry pass. The ball bounced to Moore who was able to gather and shoot a straight on 20-yard laser for the 2-0 BYUH lead.
The Sharks kept up the intensity, but were put away in the 88th minute following a foul in the 18-yard box resulting in a penalty kick for BYU-Hawaii. Sargent calmly shot to the left corner while Johns dove toward the right.
HPU got off nine shots in the contest, five on goal with BYU-Hawaii keeper Jaylie Jensen recording nine saves.
John, a junior from Sacramento, Calif./Ponderosa, recorded five saves as well for HPU off the 16 attempts made by the Seasiders. The team also recorded a save for the Sharks.
HPU is off until Saturday when they host Concordia Irvine in PacWest play on Saturday in a scheduled 3 p.m. kickoff.
