Concordia hands Sharks a 2-1 Double OT loss

KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Concordia Irvine forward Isaac Gettis scored off the deflection of a saved shot in the second overtime period hand Hawai'i Pacific University a 2-1 loss in PacWest Conference action Saturday afternoon at HPU's Atherton Field.

The Sharks (2-3-4, 2-1-2) lost for the first time in PacWest play after ties in their last two matches. CUI (4-3-2, 3-1-0) opened up a three-game Hawai'i tour with the victory.

The Sharks peppered the Eagles with shots, tallying 23 total shots with 11 on goal, but managed only one score.  CUI recorded nine shots on goal out of the 16 attempted.

HPU sophomore forward Sven Koenig of Schuerte, Germany once again found the net for the Sharks. The PacWest's leading scorer got a feed from junior forward Josch Cuerten of Cologne, Germany and blasted it past CUI goalkeeper Jordan Brinkley in the 64th minute to give HPU a 1-0 lead.

However, 40 seconds later the Eagles tied the match when Asher Axe snatched a deflection for a breakaway and beat HPU senior goalkeeper Jesse Kunitomo to even the contest at 1-all.

While both teams had excellent chances through the rest of regulation and the first overtime, neither scored until the game winner by CUI's Gettis.

"Concordia is a good team, but this is another game where we dominated but didn't finish it off," said HPU coach Chris Fisher. "The effort and desire is there, and I'm still proud of my team and the way we play. The results will surely be in our favor at some point, hopefully sooner than later."

The overtime loss spoiled a strong outing by Kunitomo, a senior from Mililani, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama who made his first start of the season. Kunitomo recorded seven saves on the afternoon in more than 103 minutes in goal.

"Jesse had a great game," Fisher added. "It's unfortunate we didn't pick up the win for him."

CUI's Brinkley had an outstanding match, as he posted eight saves, while the Eagles also got two team saves to back him up.

The Sharks don't have much time to worry about the loss as they host PacWest leader Dixie State on Monday afternoon at the Waipio Soccer Park. Match time is slated for 12:30 p.m.
