Sharks bite Cal Baptist 3-1

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific University ended their southern California road trip and avenged an earlier loss with a 3-1 victory over California Baptist in PacWest Conference action Monday night at Van Dyne Gym..

The Sharks (16-11, 12-6) snapped a two-match losing skid and moved into a tie for third with Dominican in the PacWest standings with the 25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 25-11 victory. The Lancers (20-7, 15-4) who have clinched the PacWest's NCAA Tournament bid, fell two games in the loss column Concordia Irvine (25-2, 16-2) for the conference title. CUI is not yet eligible for NCAA postseason play.

Sophomore middle blocker Carson Pyle of Houston, Texas/Memorial and senior outside hitter Pomai Recca of Waimanalo, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, led the Sharks in the victory. Pyle recorded 12 kills while hitting .800 and added six blocks. Recca recorded a game-high 15 kills with four blocks with seven digs.  Freshman rightsider hitter Alison McCollum of LaCanada, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Hearts chipped in nine kills with a block.

CBU was paced by Lauren Hackett with 15 kills, while Jenna Perry added 13 kills and Lauren Marr 11. Jessica Harris and Abbie Gortsema each posted six blocks.

HPU outhit CBU .287 to .179 despite the Lancers outblocking the Sharks 12-7. The tight match featured 32 ties and 12 lead changes.

The first set found the teams duking it out with CBU gaining a 21-20 advantage. But a Lancer service error followed by a Pyle kill started a 5-1 HPU run to win the set, with Recca getting the set-winning kill at 25-20.

The second set featured an early 8-2 run by the Sharks to take a 9-4 advantage and never look back. HPU opened a 19-11 lead only to have the Lancers make their comeback attempt, pulling within 19-15, but a Recca kill ended the run. The Sharks played out the set, winning 25-19 on a block by Pyle and Recca.

The third set was another back-and-forth affair coming down to a tie at 20-20 before the Lancers had their best run of the match, collecting five consecutive points to win 25-20.

The Sharks and Lancers started out the fourth exchanging points to 4-4 when HPU hit the go button. A service error by CBU at 5-4 started a 9-0 run for the Sharks with eight points coming off the serve of Recca. That run was part of a 12-1 run for HPU that all but ended the match. CBU closed the gap down to 17-11, but the Sharks went on another 8-0 run to close out the set and the match 25-11 on a kill by Pyle.

The win by the Sharks avenges a 3-0 sweep by the Lancers in James Carter Gym at St. Andrew's Priory on Oct. 29.

HPU returns from the mainland for two final matches of the season, both on Friday. The Sharks visit Laie on Friday morning for their last match ever against BYU-Hawaii at 11. The return to St. Andrew's Priory Friday night to close the season against cross-town rivalry with Chaminade at 7:30.
