HPU chops up Silverswords 92-58

HONOLULU — Hawai'i Pacific University won its fourth straight game as they ripped through cross-town rival Chaminade 92-58 Sunday afternoon in PacWest Conference play at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.
 
The Sharks (4-2, 2-0) picked up their second win in the PacWest Hawaii Challenge with the triumph as head coach Reid Takatsuka picked up his 101st career win. The Silverswords (0-5, 0-3) remained winless on the season.
 
The Sharks got 22 points off the bench from senior guard VeAnne Navarro of Modesto, Calif./Modesto Christian, who led the tea m with four assists. Navarro shot 67 percent of all her shots in the game. Junior Breanna Mackenzie, a 5-8 guard from Melbourne, Australia/Box Hill, collected 15 points with seven rebounds, while senior Cece Pearl, the 5-11 forward from Peoria, Ariz./Peoria, posted 11 points. Junior Sarah Liva, a 6-0 reserve center from Mililani, Hawai'i/Miliani, nearly double-doubled off the bench with nine points and nine boards.
 
Hawai'i Pacific shot 47 percent (32-of-68) from the floor, including 63 percent (15-of-24) from the 3-point arc. The Sharks hit 68 percent (13-of-19) from the foul line. HPU held the Silverswords to just 36 percent from the floor (22-of-62), 21 percent from the arc (4-of-19) and 10-of-18 (56 percent) from the free throw line. HPU outrebounded CUH 46-35.
 
The Silverswords got a game-high 24 points from Lilia Maio, with Kristle Henry adding 11 points and Carissa Webb 10 points. Destiny Castro pulled down 10 rebounds with seven points.
 
The game was a battle in the first quarter as Chaminade and HPU traded the lead three times with three ties. HPU had built an 8-point first period lead only to have the Swords answer with a 10-0 run to take the lead. The Sharks send the game to the quarter tied at 17 after a Mackenzie jumper knotted the score.
 
CUH took the lead back at 18-17 on a Castro free throw 42 seconds into the second, but that would be its last lead. HPU got a 3-pointer from Navarro to key a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to take a double-digit lead and never looked back. HPU outscored Chaminade 24-6 in the second period to take a 41-23 lead into the locker room at the half.
 
The Sharks extended the lead to 20-plus in the third quarter, and extended the lead to the 34-point final as they cleaned the bench.
 
The win sent the Sharks into the break for final examinations on a four-game winning streak and a share of first place in the PacWest Conference with California Baptist and Notre Dame de Namur, all at 2-0.
 
The HPU women will follow final exams with a contest up the H-1 against the Rainbow Wahine of Hawai'i at the Stan Sheriff Center. The game next Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. is an exhibition contest for the Sharks that will count on the record of the Wahine.
