HPU and BYU-Hawaii settle for 2-2 draw

LAIE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University battled cross-island rival BYU-Hawaii to a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon at the BYU-Hawaii Soccer Field.

The Sharks go to 0-1-2 on the season, while BYUH opened the season with the tie.

Jacob McRae led the Seasiders with two goals inside of the first 10 minutes including an early penalty kick.

The Sharks got goals from Josiah Darland and Sven Koening in the match.

McRae scored his first in the eighth minute when Pierre Henrio dished up the ball for McRae head it in for the early lead.

A foul in the box led to a McRae's penalty kick goal two minutes later.

Those would be the only balls to get past Shark keeper Chandler Schur who made a save on the only other on-goal shot of the seven attempts by BYUH.

The Sharks got one goal back in the 39th minute as Darland followed a blocked ball by BYUH keeper  Jaden Epplette. Darland, a freshman, stuck it behind Epplette to get HPU on the board.

BYUH carried the lead into the second half before the Sharks got the equalizer in the 64th minute. Sophomore Koenig got open inside the 18-yard box and tied the game.

The sides played even through regulation. HPU had four good chances in the second overtime, but Epplette collected three saves and a Koenig shot went off the post.

HPU is off until next Saturday when the Sharks host their first match at home as they welcome the only Canadian NCAA Division II team, Simon Fraser, to the island for a non-conference match.
