Sharks sweep Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific University got a clean sweep of the third match in its Northern California trip as the Sharks dispatched Holy Names 3-0 in PacWest Conference play Friday night at Tobin Gym.
 
The Sharks (8-6, 4-1) won their third straight match and fourth in the last five with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 victory over the Hawks (1-13, 0-6).
 
Senior Pomai Recca, the 5-9 outside hitter from Waimanalo, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, led Shark attack with 14 kills, 15 digs and a game-high .433 hitting percentage. Recca also collected two blocks.
 
Freshman outside hitter Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico, added nine kills with a .316 hitting percentage, while junior middle blocker/outside hitter Alyson Brunner of Willows, Calif./Willow led the game with four blocks.
 
HNU's Heather Emory posted seven kills to lead the Hawks.
 
The Sharks used a 9-0 first set run as part of a 12-2 spurt to grab a lead they wouldn't relinquish on the way to the 25-17 win in the opener. Recca collected seven kills and Escobar five kills in the set as the Sharks hit .462.
 
The second saw the Sharks fall behind 7-1 and then 8-3 before mounting an amazing comeback. HPU got a sideout on a kill from sophomore Kayla Demari of Dana Point, Calif./JSerra Catholic for their fourth point of the set. Then Recca stepped up to the service line and led the Sharks to 15 straight points for a 16-0 run. HPU hit .333 for the set and closed the 25-13 win with a Recca kill.
 
After the intermission, HPU used four blocks in the set to hold off the stubborn Hawks 25-20.  HPU used a 4-0 run after being up 19-18 to take control of the set and win the match.
 
The Sharks played strong defense, holding the Hawks to a .103 hitting percentage.
 
HPU closes their four-match California week on Saturday when they visit Dominican for a 10 a.m. HST (1 p.m. PDT) match at the Conlan Center.
