WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University scored early, then had to hold on as Holy Names and the Sharks locked up for two overtimes before ending in a 2-2 tie on Saturday afternoon in PacWest action at the Waipio Soccer Complex.
The Sharks (2-4-2, 0-3-1) went to overtime for the fourth time this season and double overtime for the third time. The Hawks (1-6-1, 1-1-1) played in their second overtime contest of the year.
HPU opened the scoring quickly with goals in the fifth and 11th minutes.
Junior
Gerrit Arzberger from Munich, Germany, put HPU up 1-0 with his 30-yard blast following a feed from senior
Mario Garcia of Leganes, Spain. Garcia sent the ball from upper left wing to a centered Arzberger who put the one-timer in the back of the net.
HPU made it 2-0 when Garcia made a header pass to junior
Jacob Malach of Boise, Idaho in the box. Malach turned and punched it past HNU goalkeeper Juan Nieves for the two goal advantage just over 10 minutes in.
But that would be the last goal Nieves would allow and the Hawks battled back.
Holy Names got its first score in the 31st minute when Carlos Vazquez-Perez scored his seventh goal of the year on a shot from the top of the box off of Yohannes Harish's corner kick, making it 2-1.
The 2-1 differential held until four-and-a half minutes to play, when the Hawks knotted the game. A long pass from Julio Varela-Serriteno came to the far post where Josiah Romero headed it in for a 2-all game.
Both clubs had opportunities in the overtimes, but could not convert.
HPU senior goalkeeper

The match was the first of a three-game homestand for the Sharks, who are in action at the Waipio Soccer Complex again on Thursday afternoon against Academy of Art at 3 p.m.
