HPU Goes The Distance in beating Biola 3-2

HONOLULU — Hawai'i Pacific University got back on the winning track Saturday night as they needed five sets to down PacWest newcomer Biola 3-2 in James Castle Gym at St. Andrew's Priory.

The Sharks (6-8, 4-2) outdistanced the Eagles (8-5, 2-3) 25-19, 16-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-10 to close out a six-match homestand.

"This was a big win tonight," said head coach Jenic Tumaneng. "Biola is a really good team and this was just what we needed before heading out on the road."

The Sharks had a season-high 12.0 team blocks for the match, while hitting .158. Holy Names hit .172 and recorded 8.0 team blocks.

Sophomore outside hitter Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico led the way for HPU with a season-high 22 kills to go with a .314 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, added 17 kills. Junior middle hitter Carson Pyle of Houston, Texas/Memorial tallied a season-high eight blocks, the most for the Sharks this season.

Biola was paced by Karly Dantuma with 12 kills, while Hanna van Warmerdam and Brooke Watts each posted nine kills.

The Sharks opened the match with a 5-0 run only to have the Eagles battle back and eventually take a 15-14 lead. HPU rattled off a 3-0 run to take the lead. The Sharks got a kill from Lea Felton to key a 4-0 run to go up 23-17, then traded points to win 25-19 on an Escobar kill.

Set two was all Biola after a 6-1 run that snapped a 5-all tie. The Eagles never let HPU get closer than three points in the set as BU claimed a 25-16 decision.

The third set hinged on an HPU 7-0 run that shifted a two-point deficit to a five-point lead. Collie opened and closed the run with kills. The Eagles came back to tie the set at 15, but HPU built the lead back to 22-18 and exchanged points with the Eagles to win 25-21 on a kill by Collie.

Biola controlled the fourth set, but had to withstand a Shark barrage to win 25-22. Down 24-18, HPU went on a 4-0 run that brought the Sharks back to 24-22 before the a van Warmerdam kill ended the comeback attempt.

The final set was all HPU, starting with a 4-0 run. The Sharks went up 8-3 on a combo block by Pyle and Collie at the court switch, when Biola went on a 5-1 run to tie the deciding set at 9-9. That's when a kill from Felton started a 6-1 closing run.  A service ace by Jade Gillespie and a kill from Escobar ended the two hour, 18 minute match.

HPU now prepares for a five-match road swing that opens on Friday in St. George, Utah when the Sharks face Dixie State for the second time this season. First serve is set for 2 p.m. HST (6 p.m. MDT) at the Student Activities Center.
