Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

HPU Rips Chaminade 3-1

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University's men's soccer team scored twice within three minutes in the first half and added an insurance goal late in the second as the Sharks beat cross-town rival Chaminade 3-1 in PacWest Conference play on Saturday at Saint Louis Field.

The Sharks (5-8-3, 3-7-2) chalked up their first win in their last six contests. The Silverswords (3-8-2, 2-7-2) fell for the second time in the last three games.

Chaminade got on the scoreboard first in the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge contest, scoring in the 23rd minute when Curtis Coburn headed in the corner kick of Nick Kraus for his second goal of the season giving the Silverswords a 1-0 lead.

The Sharks answered just 10 minutes later when junior Michael Steele of Ferndale, Wash./Ferndale, stole the ball from Chaminade goalkeeper Bernd Buescherhoff and tapped it into the lower left of the goal from 10 yards out for his first goal of the year and a 1-1 tie.

But HPU did stop there. Three minutes later in the 36th minute, sophomore Paul Enzigmueller of Zimdorf, Germany, collected his first goal of the season. Enzigmueller collected the ball in the midfield and pushed it past Buescherhoff who had come out of the goal to meet the ball. The score gave HPU a 2-1 lead at the half.

The score held until the 84th minute when HPU grabbed an insurance goal. Sophomore Christian Porras of Rockville, Md./Rockville dropped a pass to junior Gerrit Arzberger of Munich, Germany. Arzberger dribbled from 20 yards out and rifled a shot past a diving keeper for his fifth goal of the year and a 3-1 score.

HPU sophomore Chandler Schur of Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg, had a strong game, racking up five saves with the goal allowed while facing 15 Silversword shots.

Buescherhoff had three saves for Chaminade and allowed the three goals against 14 HPU shots.

The Sharks have one final game for the 2017 campaign, next Saturday, Nov. 4, against Fresno Pacific. The Senior Day contest at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
