Sharks Down Silverswords 3-1

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University collected a 3-1 PacWest Conference victory over cross-town rival Chaminade Saturday afternoon at St. Louis Field.
 
The Sharks (8-8-1, 4-7-1) chalked up their second straight win. The Silverswords (5-8-2, 3-6-1) remained winless in their last seven outings.
 
The Sharks scored three times before allowing CUH a goal with four minutes to play.
 
HPU opened the scoring in the 26th minute as senior Hi'ilani Thomas of Honolulu/Punahou, scored her second goal of the season in as many games, as she put the ball in the net off of a corner kick by senior midfielder Sara Romo of Elk Grove, Calif./Franklin for the 1-0 lead.
 
The score held through halftime, but HPU got on the board again quickly in the second half.
 
In the 49th minute, sophomore Ebony Madrid of Porterville, Calif./Ramstein collected her team-leading ninth goal of the season from 10 yards out on a centering pass from junior Leonicia Lopez of Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers HS.
 
The Sharks added an insurance goal in the 76th minute as junior Josefine Von Der Burg of Gothenburg, Sweden, got a right-to-left feed from Madrid and scored her first goal of the season for a 3-0 lead.
 
HPU looked for a shutout, but Chaminade got on the scoreboard in the 86th minute when Bree Chang blasted a free kick from 40 yards out into the goal for her first of the season.
 
Senior goalkeeper Alannah John of Sacramento, Calif./Ponderosa got her second start of the season, notching five saves and allowing the goal against 13 shots by the Swords.
 
CUH keeper Kasila Carey also posted five saves while allowing three goals in facing 14 HPU shots.
 
The Sharks have one remaining game in the 2017 season. HPU hosts Fresno Pacific next Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. for the Senior Day contest.
