EUGENE, Ore. — Hawai'i Pacific University opened the game on a 14-2 run and never looked back as it totally dominated New Hope Christian (Ore.) 107-62 Tuesday evening at Cordeiro Court.
The Sharks (3-1) finished their season opening road trip with the win, that featured four games in five days. The Deacons (1-8) of the NCCAA's Pacific Christian Athletic Conference West dropped their fourth straight game.
The Sharks shot 61 percent from the floor, including 41 percent (9-of-22) from the 3-point arc, while hitting 67 percent (10-of-15) from the foul line. The Deacons were held to 33 percent from the floor, but connected on 41 percent (12-of-29) from the 3-point arc, to go with connecting on 67 percent (6-of-9) from the free throw line. HPU almost doubled NHCC on the boards 43-22, and turned the ball over 14 times to the Deacons 16.
Playing only 20 minutes, senior forward
Niksha Federico of San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic, continued to pound the competition, recording his second double-double of the season with a game-highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds with a blocked shot. Senior forward
Albert Christensson of Lund, Sweden/South Kent Prep, added a season-high 18 points with seven rebounds, while junior forward
Jonathan Janssen of Noosa Heads, Australia/Mountain Creek, posted 16 points. A total of six Sharks scored in double figures as redshirt freshman Amiri Chukuwemeka of Phoenix, Ariz./McClintock scored 11 points with a game-high six assists, freshman guard
Emil Isovic of Kristianstad, Sweden added 11 points and junior forward
Spencer Vering chalked up 10 points with six rebounds and six assists.
New Hope Christian was led by junior Jabari Robinson with 17 points and five rebounds, senior Isiah Large with 14 points and sophomore Jaylen Rose with 13 points, five rebounds and four steals.
The game was never in question from the start as HPU opened with an 8-0 run on triples by Federico and Chukwuemeka and a transition basket by senior
Larry Lewis off a steal that forced a timeout by NHCC. After the Deacons first score HPU got another 6-0 run for a 14-2 lead after a layup by Federico and the Sharks led by double-digits from there on.
The Sharks, who played all 10 players a total of 10 minutes each in the first half, led by as many as 29 points in the first half after a Christensson layup and held a 28-point 53-25 lead at halftime.
The second half started much like the first for HPU, as the Sharks went on a 13-0 run in the first five minutes for a 66-25 lead. After allowing a 3-pointer by the Deacons Isiah Large, HPU seven more points to take its largest lead of 45 points at 73-28 on Federico's trey with 13:21 to play.
The Sharks freely subbed the rest of the way with Federico playing 20 minutes and every Shark playing at least 15 minutes.
The Sharks will return to Oahu for some time off before opening on the island in the Hoops In Hawai'i Thanksgiving Classic on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at Moanalua High School Gym. HPU faces Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m. that evening to start the classic.
