The match was tight in all but the third set as the teams battled it out.
The opening set saw Biola go on a 5-0 run early and a 6-0 run later to claim an 18-11 lead. HPU swapped scores with the Eagles who built a 21-16 advantage. That's when the Sharks took advantage of a BU service error to start a 6-1 run that tied the set at 22-22 on a Collie kill. The teams traded points to stay tied at 23, when the Eagles got back-to-back kills from Winslow and Dantuma to take the set 25-23.
The Sharks jumped out to the early 8-5 lead in the second set, but the Eagles rattled off a 7-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. HPU swung the pendulum with a 4-1 run before BU added a score to make it a two-point 14-12 Eagle lead. The Sharks got what they needed when a Collie kill started a 5-0 run to put HPU back in front 17-14. Biolan answered with a 4-0 run to go up 18-17, but that would be it. Pyle's kill knotted the set and started a 6-0 run to go up 23-18. HPU got a block from Pyle and Alyson Bruner to lead 24-19, then held on as Biola won three straight points. However, Escobar ended the set with a kill for a 25-22 win.
He third set had HPU up 4-3 when Biola scored on three straight Shark errors as part of a 7-0 run as the Eagles took command. The Sharks fought back to be down two at 12-10, but the Eagles used a 4-0 run to start a 7-1 run and the Sharks never recovered. The Eagles feathered out the set to win 25-16.
The fourth, and what would be the final set, had more momentum swings than a low-budget movie. The set was tied 11 times with five lead changes, with both teams holding multiple three-point leads. HPU was up 22-19 when the Eagles denied the Sharks bid for the set. The Eagles capitalized on a pair of HPU errors in a 4-0 run to take a 23-22 lead. HPU answered with a kill from Collie and Pyle to grab a 24-23 lead and served for the set. But a service error gave BU the tie, and a Sharks attack error let the Eagles serve for the win at 25-24. Pyle gave HPU a chance with a kill to tie it at 25, but a BU kill from Bauder put the Eagles back up. Then a block from Bauder and Brinley Beresford ended the set and match 27-25.
HPU has one more contest on its four-match California road trip when the Sharks travel to San Diego to face Point Loma on Saturday. First serve at Golden Gym has been moved to 3 p.m. HST (5 p.m. PST) because of PLNU's NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament game on Saturday.
