HPU sweeps Western Oregon

KANEOHE, Hawai'i — After two straight rainouts, Hawai'i Pacific University got back on  Howard Okita Field and swept visiting Western Oregon 10-6 and 8-6.

The Sharks (2-2) had to come from behind in both contests. The Wolves (2-5) dropped the first two of six games on the island

"We took advantage of our chances today," said HPU head coach Bryan Nakasone. "I'm happy we were able to make comebacks in both games and get our first wins of the season."

Senior third base Kayla Sanchez of Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt and freshman designated player Brazzlyn Tovio-Asato of Kapolei, Hawai'i/University Lab were the offensive stars of the twinbill. Sanchez went 3-for-6 with a triple and three runs scored in the two games, while Tovio-Asato was 2-for-6 with a homerun and two runs scored.

HPU will be in action again on Thursday, when they host Canada's Simon Fraser University for the doubleheader that was postponed from last weekend starting at 1 p.m. at Howard Okita Field.

Game One

HPU trailed Western Oregon 6-5 after allowing a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, but followed it by plating three runs in the bottom to blast open the game.

Sanchez triple drove in Sierra Dias who drew a leadoff walk to tie the game. Noelani Boyer drove in Sanchez with an RBI single and after the Sharks loaded the bases, freshman pinch hitter Emiliee Leonard drew a walk for an 8-6 lead.

In the Sharks sixth with two on and two out, junior centerfielder Kiana Wolfe tripled down the right field line to score a pair and give HPU the 10-6 lead. The Sharks gave up a hit in the top of the seventh but shut down the Wolves.

Junior righthander Alexa McCoin got the win in relief, going 6.2 innings to strike out five while allowing two runs. WOU's Chandler Bishop got the loss in relief allowing five runs on six hits.

Game Two

The Sharks spotted the Wolves a pair of runs in the first two innings before breaking the game open in the fourth.

Down 2-0, designated player Tovio-Asato doubled to start the inning and scored on a ground out by Leonard. After loading the bases, HPU added a run on a walk by Wolfe. Dias followed with a 3-run triple down the right field line to give HPU the 5-2 advantage.

HPU kept it up in the fifth as Tovio-Asato led off with her first home run of the year, then Leonard doubled to right center and scored on a single by Kristy Washizaki.

Boyer tripled in a run in the sixth for the Sharks and it was needed as WOU added a run in the sixth.

A Sharks error made for an interesting seven, as HPU allowed the Wolves to plate three runs but got a final ground out to end the game.

Leonard got her first win of the year, going seven innings with three strikeouts while allowing six runs on 10 hits. WOU's Haley Fabian got the loss allowing seven runs on seven hits.
