HONOLULU — Hawai'i Pacific University made it a four-game win streak on Thursday afternoon, as the Sharks swept a doubleheader from Simon Fraser 2-1 in eight innings and 5-2.
The Sharks (4-2) and The Clan (4-4) finally got their doubleheader played. The twinbill had been postponed on both Saturday and Sunday, then had to be moved from HPU's
Howard Okita Field to Sand Island Field due to wet grounds on the Kaneohe campus.
"We are so happy to finally get that doubleheader in," said HPU head coach
Bryan Nakasone. "The first game was a great one we pulled out and we got our chance and cashed in the second."
Senior rightfielder
Nicole Viena of Corona, Calif./Santiago, led the way for the Sharks offensively, going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, and a run with a walk and hit by pitch. Viena also stole a base on her only attempt. Senior third base
Kayla Sanchez of Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt and junior first base
Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning, each went 2-for-7. Sanchez had an RBI with a run scored, Boyer scored three runs.
HPU will be in action again on Friday with a single game against Simon Fraser about 3 p.m. It follows SFU's game with Chaminade at 1 p.m., both at HPU's
Howard Okita Field.
Game One
HPU came from behind to win 2-1 in eight innings.
The Clan drew their run in the top of the second, after a Haley Gearey's leadoff walk, a wild pitch, then an RBI single by Meghan Malkowich.
The Sharks answered in the bottom of the fifth when Viena was hit by a pitch, followed by back-to-back walks to advance to third. Sanchez drove in Viena with an RBI fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the eighth, Boyer was placed at second to start the inning in the international tie breaker. Boyer was bunted to third and was driven in by Viena.
Sophomore righthander
Jordan Curry of Farmington, N.M./Farmington, evened her record at 1-1 with the win, going the distance allowing just two hits and the one run in eight innings with three strikeouts.
SFU's Tori Belton got the loss and dropped to 2-3 with the loss, going 7.2 innings after allowing just three hits and two runs, one earned.
Game Two
Once again the Sharks had to play from behind, but came back to win 5-2.
The Clan got opened the scoring in the first with a double by designated player Taylor Lundrigan to drive in centerfielder Taylor Gillis. SFU added a second run in the third on an RBI single by Gearey who drove in Robyn Mogavero for a 2-0 advantage.
The Sharks came back to tie the game in the fourth when Viena drove in Boyer with an RBI single and
Dominique Walker scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth HPU plated three runs to take the lead when Sanchez scored on a sacrifice foul fly by
Brazzlynn Tovio-Asato, with RBI singles by Walker and Viena that plated Boyer and Walker respectively.
The Sharks withstood threats from the Clan in the sixth and seventh for the win.
Junior righthander
Gabriella Nowack of San Jose, Calif./Silver Creek, went the distance for her first win of the year, allowing two runs, one earned on four hits with three strikeouts.
Alia Stachoski went to 2-1 for the Clan, allowing all five runs, all earned, on six hits with five strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
