Sharks and USciences split doubleheader

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University opened a five-game series with a doubleheader split with University of the Sciences of Philadelphia on Friday at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Sharks (5-2) won game one 7-1, while the Devils (1-1) won the seven-inning second game 3-1 to open the season.

"We came out strong in the first game behind a solid pitching performance by William Clements," said HPU head coach Garett Yukumoto. "But in the second game we made mistakes and compounded them with more mistakes. That cost us."

Clements, the 6-2 junior righthanded pitcher from Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol, went the distance in winning game one scattering five hits while allowing one run and striking out three. Clements allowed only one walk as he threw 93 pitches in nine innings.

Designated hitter Cody Santana, a 6-1 junior from Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure, went 3-for-6 with a run scored, while second baseman Trey Yukumoto, a 5-9 redshirt freshman from Waipahu, Hawai'i/Leilehua, was 2-for-6 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored to highlight the Sharks offense.
