WAIPAHU, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University chalked up a wins in both games of a doubleheader against University of the Sciences of Philadelphia Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (7-2) outlasted the Devils (1-3) in game one 15-9, then took the seven inning nightcap 6-1.
"We took advantage of what they gave us today," said HPU head coach
Garett Yukumoto. "We overcame another slow start in the first game and battled through it. And in the second game we got a great pitching performance from
Jordan Knoll and cashed in mistakes from (USciences)."
The seven-inning complete game by Knoll, the senior lefthander from Salem, Ore./South Salem, was a highlight of the day. Knoll allowed just one run and two hits while striking out nine batters.
Designated hitter
Cody Santana, a junior from Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS, went 4-for-6 with a double, a triple and two RBI in the twin bill. Sophomore centerfielder
Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City was 4-for-7 with three RBI, and junior first baseman
Wyatt Hoppie of Orange Calif./Villa Park went 3-for-6 with his first home run of the season and four RBI.
The Sharks and Devils close a five-game series on Sunday with a single game starting at noon.
Game One
The Sharks trailed USciences 7-3 after four-and-a half innings before chalking up 12 runs over the next four innings to win a scoring-fest 15-9.
HPU took advantage of three Devil errors in the first to collect three runs with an RBI single from Hoppie and an RBI walk from
Austin Inabata as well as a score off one of the errors.
USciences collected a five-run top of the fifth to go up 7-3 with an RBI single from Justin Skinner and RBI doubles from Mike Pollastrelli and Pat Hiester.
That's when HPU started adding crooked numbers for each of the next four innings.
Hoppie started the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to left field, then Inabata walked and was doubled home by Tokunaga to pull within one at 7-6.
In the Sharks sixth following a Devils run in the top of the inning,
Kreston Woods leadoff walk was turned into a run with a Santana single and a passed ball. After USciences loaded the bases by issuing two more walks,
Matthew Tsutomi's sacrifice fly drove in Santana. Then an RBI fielder's choice brought home
Jordan Mopas.
HPU plated two more in the seventh. Santana tripled in Tokunaga who reached on an error. Mopas singled in Santana to move the score to 12-8.
The Sharks added to the cushion in the eighth by scoring four runs, with Tokunaga chalking up an RBI double, Woods a sacrifice fly and Santana an RBI double to go with a score on a wild pitch to post a 15-8 advantage
HPU allowed the Devils a run in the ninth to make the final 15-9.
HPU's
Tyler Hazlett (2-0) picked up his second win of the season in relief after pitching 3.1 innings and allowing one unearned run. UScience Chris Kelly got the loss allowing the go ahead runs.
Game Two
The Sharks broke open a scoreless game in the second inning, taking advantage of three consecutive hit batters by Devil's starter Chris Geraci. Inabata drove in one run with a sacrifice fly, while
Keola Himan came home on a wild pitch and Tokunaga used an RBI single to plate the third run of the inning.
The Sharks tallied two more in the fifth as Tokunaga was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. Pinch hitter
Mitchell Bumann drove in Tokunaga, and came around to score on Hoppie's sacrifice fly.
HPU added a final run in the sixth after Himan walked, then stole second and third, and was driven in with an RBI single by
Froy Smith.
Knoll went into the seventh with a one-hitter. He retired the first batter, but allowed a walk to Devil pinch hitter Dan Mersman. After a balk allowed Mersman to second, Hiester doubled just inside the third base line to score the shutout breaking run. Knoll got into a two-out jam thanks to a hit batsman and an error, but was able to get Nate Steele to foul out to Hoppie at first.
UScience's Chris Geraci got the loss, going 4.1 innings allowing five runs, three earned, on three hits while striking out six.
