Sharks clobber Vulcans 21-4, 9-2

HILO, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University scored early and often in sweeping both games of a doubleheader against Hawai'i-Hilo at Wong Stadium.
 
The Sharks (11-3, 1-1) beat the Vulcans (1-3, 1-1) in the non-conference contests 21-4 in the first game and 9-2 in the seven-inning second game.
 
The Sharks scored five runs in the first inning of game one and six runs in the opening frame of the second game as they never trailed.
 
One of the highlights in the offensive explosion was the grand slam of junior Mitchell Bumann of Corona, Calif./Temescal Canyon, his first homer of the season. Bumann was 3-for-8 on the afternoon with six RBI, three runs scored, a walk and a hit by pitch.
 
HPU sophomore Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis HS was 4-for-8 with four RBI and two runs scored. Junior Codi Santana from Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure, and junior Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza both posted four RBI days.
 
Sharks freshman righthander Blake Flint of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle went to 3-0 on the season with the win in game one, while senior righthander Kyle Detwiler of Chandler, Ariz./Mountain Pointe got his first decision with a win in game two.
 
HPU travels to the mainland for eight games next week, starting on Saturday with a doubleheader at Point Loma at 9 a.m. HST (11 a.m. PST).
 
Game One
 
The Sharks blew open the game in the first inning and didn't stop scoring as they plated 21 runs on 20 hits and took advantage of five Vulcan errors.
 
HPU led off the game with a Tanner Tokunaga walk and Ryan Torres-Torioka double to start a merry-go-round around the bases. The Sharks would score five runs on RBIs by Santana, Woods, Buman. Then added a single run in the second on Wyatt Hoppie's RBI double.
 
After having a scoreless third inning, the Sharks put up crooked numbers in in the next four innings.
 
In the fourth, Woods drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded two out single to center.
 
The fifth, HPU got a pair of singles and took advantage of UHH errors on the next two batters to collected a pair of runs. The Sharks plated two more in the inning on RBIs from Woods and Jordan Mopas for a 12-0 lead.
 
HPU took advantage of two Vulcan errors, a wild pitch and an RBI hit by pitch for three more runs.
 
But it was the six run seventh that put away Hilo. HPU got an RBI double from Froy Smith, a sacrifice fly from Tokunaga, RBI singles from Jaison Craig and Will Leskovec, and a two RBI double from Mopas.
 
UHH put two on the board in the seventh and ninth, but it was too little too late.
 
Flint struckout five Vulcans in five innings, allowing three hits in getting his third win.
 
The 21 runs for the Sharks were the most since HPU beat the Vulcans 24-4 on April 19, 2015.
 
Game Two
 
HPU picked up where it left off in game one, scoring six runs in the opening frame and cruising to the 9-2.
 
Santana started the scoring with a two RBI single before walked two more Sharks to load the bases. Bumann stepped up to send a 1-1 pitch deep to left field for a grand slam home run, his first round tripper of the season.
 
HPU added two more in the second on a Santana RBI single and then on a Vulcan wild pitch for an 8-0 lead after two innings.
 
UHH scored two runs on a two RBI double in the fifth before the Sharks added an insurance run in the seventh on a Froy Smith RBI double.
 
Detwiler went five innings allowing three hits and two runs while striking out four. Tyler Van Stone pitched two innings without allowing a hit.
