WAIPAHU, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University split a PacWest doubleheader with Holy Names University to open a four-game series on Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (13-15, 3-13) dominated game one 13-3, but the Hawks (5-22, 2-12) came back to take the seven-inning nightcap 5-2.
"We hit the ball well in the first game," said HPU head coach
Garett Yukumoto. "Then we were our own worst enemy in the second game. We gave away three runs with our errors, and we can't have that."
The Sharks racked up 16 hits on the way to plating 13 runs in the first game and looked to be on a roll heading into the second.
But two errors after two were out in the first inning allowed the Hawks to grab a two-run lead and HPU seemed to play from behind the rest of the night.
Junior designated hitter
Codi Santana of Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS and junior first baseman
Wyatt Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park, were the offensive guns of the twinbill. Santana went 3-for-5 with a triple, 2 RBI and two runs scored in the two games. Hoppie went 4-for-7 with a double, 3 RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore righthander
Tyler Van Stone of Henderson, Nev./Foothills, allowing a run on four hits and striking out eight in six innings to pick up the first game win. Billy Clements got a three-inning save, his first of the year.
Senior righty
Kyle Detwiler of Chandler, Ariz./Mountain Pointe was tagged with the loss in game two, going five innings with four hits and four runs (two earned) with four strikeouts.
The two teams play a single nine-inning contest on Sunday starting at noon, then wrapup the series on Monday at 6 p.m., both games at Hans L'Orange Park.
Game One
The Sharks collected two runs in the first inning and three in the fifth before exploding the in seventh on their way to a 13-3 win to open the series.
HPU got the bases loaded with two out in the first before sophomore leftfielder
Jordan Mopas got a 2-RBI double to left to open the scoring.
HNU grabbed one back on first baseman Nick Snyder's one-out solo home run to left field in the top of the second and the game stayed at 2-1 until the Sharks fifth.
With two out and a man on second, HPU proceeded to get back-to-back RBI doubles from junior third baseman
Ryan Torres-Torioka and junior catcher
Kreston Woods, followed by an RBI single from Hoppie to up the score to 5-1.
After Clemens relived Van Stone in the seventh, a wind-blown ball caused an error to start the inning with a single that followed set up an RBI ground out by Hawks leftfielder Paul Kennedy and an RBI single to center by third baseman Chris Gnos.
But in the bottom of the inning, HPU got a runner on when reliever Erik Estrada hit sophomore centerfielder
Tanner Tokunaga to lead off the inning. Tokunaga stole second, then third when the bats opened up. Torioka posted an RBI double to left, followed by Woods RBI single, Santana's RBI triple to right center and Hoppie's RBI single through the left side to make it 9-3 with nobody out.
Two more HPU batters were hit and a walk issued to go with a sacrifice fly RBI from junior shortstop
Mitchell Bumann, HPU added two more runs when Tokunaga poked a 2-RBI single through the left side to bring the score to 12-3.
The Sharks added an insurance run in the ninth as Mopas doubled down the left field line and junior second baseman
Froy Smith drove him home on an RBI single to center.
Game Two
HPU opened the second game by giving up two unearned runs in the first as HNU opened the game with back-to-back singles. With two out, Brad Bussard struck out swinging, but Shark senior catcher Will Leskovic couldn't hang on to the ball and then threw wildly down the first baseline allowing a Evan Maeker to score. A passed ball allowed John Salda to scoot across next and HNU had a 2-0 lead.
The Sharks answered with a leadoff double by Tokunaga in the home first and an RBI single by Hoppie to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the third, the Sharks tied the game when Tokunaga walked, went to second on a wild pitch and stole third, then scored on Hoppie's RBI double down the left field line to make it 2-2.
But in a fateful fifth, Salda reached on a leadoff walk to set up a two-run homer by Kennedy over the left field fence for a 4-2 lead and the Hawks never trailed again.
HNU collected an insurance run in the sixth after Alex Denobriga reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on a passed ball, Salda ripped an RBI single to left for a 5-2 advantage.
Hawks starter Daniel Hopkins (2-2) got the win going four innings allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Reliever Kyle Scott did not allow a hit in shutting down the Sharks the last three innings.
Detwiler (1-3) got the loss and reliever
Evan-Thomas May gave up three hits and the unearned run in the sixth along with two strikeouts.
