IRVINE, Calif. -- The Hawai'i Pacific University baseball team's woes on the mainland continued on Saturday as the Sharks dropped a PacWest Conference doubleheader to Concordia (Calif.) at Eagles Field.
The Sharks (14-18, 4-17) fell to the Eagles (15-15, 12-6) 4-2 in game one and 7-5 in game two.
The Sharks have now dropped all 10 games they've played in California.
Concordia pulled away from HPU in the next to last inning in both games.
Senior
Austin Inabata of Kapolei, Hawai'i/Moanalua led the offensive attack for the Sharks, going 4-for-7 in the doubleheader with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Wyatt Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park was 3-for-7 with an RBI and run scored, while sophomore
Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City went 4-for-9 with a run scored.
HPU and Concordia play the third game of the four game series on Sunday at 10 a.m. HST (1 p.m. PDT) at Eagle Field.
Game One
The Sharks came back from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh inning only to see the Eagles break the tie with two runs in the eighth for a 4-2 victory.
A scoreless duel through five innings, Concordia scored twice in the sixth inning on a walk, an RBI triple by Jair Donovan, who then scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead. Another walk chased HPU starter
Tyler Van Stone and reliever Billy Clemens shut down the inning.
The Sharks answered in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs. Inabata singled to get on, then Tokunaga followed with a single to center where Dillon Millar misplayed the ball allowing Inabata to score and Tokunaga advance to second. After a strikeout,
Kreston Woods singled to right to put runners on the corners and Hoppie sent a sacrifice fly to center to score Tokunaga and tie the game at 2-all.
In the bottom of the eighth, still tied at 2-2, CUI got a back-to-back one-out singles from Donovan and Bailey Collins to put runners on the corners. Then Hunter Holland's RBI single broke the tie. The Eagles pulled off a double steal as Hunter went to second and Collins went to third. HPU catcher Woods tried to erase Collins, but the throw was wild and Collins added the insurance run.
Clemens (1-3) got the loss for the Sharks, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with a strikeout in 3.0 innings. Van Stone got no decision as he went 5.0 innings with five strikeouts as he allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits.
Concordia reliever Jason McLellan (1-2) picked up the win, with Carpenter Pagget chalking up his fifth save.
Game Two
Concordia's four-run sixth inning allowed the Eagles to grab the seven-inning second game of the doubleheader from the Sharks 7-5.
The Eagles picked up a pair of runs in the first by loading the bases with a leadoff walk, bunt single and walk for Collins who smacked a 2-RBI single for the early lead.
But HPU answered with three runs in the second. Catcher
Robert Fram opened the inning with a double, then
Mitchell Bumann singled to center. Fram scored on the play and an error by catcher Joey Thompson allowed Bumann to reach second. Bumann went to second on wild pitch and scored on a balk by Eagle pitcher Alex Zalasky.
Matthew Tsutomi doubled to left and Tokunaga singled to setup a sacrifice fly by Inabata.
In the third, the Sharks got a sacrifice fly from
Jordan Mopas to plate Hoppie who started the inning with a single. However, CUI also plated a run in the bottom of the inning on Holland's ground out to score Donovan who reached on a walk.
HPU got the lead to 5-3 in the fifth when Inabata, who had singled earlier in the inning, scored on a passed ball by Thompson.
In the fateful sixth for the Eagles, Millar reached on an error at short by Bumann and pinch hitter Michael Nava dropped a bunt for a single. Chris Martin followed with an RBI double to plate Millar. Ryan Land was hit by reliever
Jordan Knoll to load the bases. Haloa Dudoit grounded to Tsutomi at third who went home to get Nava, but the throw for a potential double play got through Hoppie for an error that allowed Martin to tie the game at 5-5. Donovan followed with an RBI single to bring home Land for the lead and Collins sacrifice fly brought home the insurance run by Dudoit.
Starter
Kyle Detwiler did not get a decision, going 3.1 innings allowing four hits and three runs. Knoll (1-2) got the loss allowing five hits and the four unearned runs.
CUI reliever Cade Temple (2-1) was credited with the win and Pagett chalked up his sixth save of the season in finishing.
