HPU sweeps Holy Names 8-4, 13-2

FREMONT, Calif. -- Hawai'i Pacific University used the long ball to put away Holy Names in both games of a PacWest Conference softball doubleheader on Friday at the Ohlone Softball Field.

The Sharks (22-18, 11-13) downed the Hawks (4-33, 2-22) 8-4 and 13-2 (six innings).

HPU got a seventh inning home run from winning freshman pitcher Emiliee Leonard of LaMirada, Calif./St. Paul in the first game. Then senior catcher Carolann Toyama of Honolulu/Maryknoll recorded her first career homer, a grand slam, in the sixth inning of the second game.

The Sharks senior third baseman Kayla Sanchez of Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt was also strong at the plate, going 5-for-8 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and five runs scored on the afternoon.

HPU continues its short California trip on Saturday when it faces Notre Dame de Namur in a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT).

Game One

The Sharks scored three times in the top of the first inning and never trailed as they downed Holy Names 8-4.

HPU loaded the bases for an RBI single by Sanchez to start the game, then Dominique Walker drove in two more runs with a single up the middle.

HNU added one run in the bottom of the first on a walk followed by an RBI double by Cassidy Clavelle. The Hawks added a second in the third when Clavelle picked up an RBI single to close the score to 3-2.

But in the top of the fifth, HPU broke it open with another 3-run inning. After a walk by Noelani Boyer and a single by Sanchez, Leonard hit a fly ball to center that was dropped allowing Sanchez and pinch runner Kristy Washizaki to score. Walker followed and doubled in Leonard for a 6-2 advantage.

The Sharks added the insurance in the seventh as Sanchez doubled to start the inning and Leonard followed with her fifth home run of the season to left center.

HNU tried a comeback, getting two unearned runs as the Hawks loaded the bases with two out on a bunt, an error and a walk. The Jazmine Lewis reached on an error that allowed two runs to score.

Leonard went the distance in grabbing her seventh win of the season (7-6), allowing the four runs (two unearned) on only four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Clavelle (1-12) got the loss.

Game Two

The Sharks had to come from behind to start game two, but when they did it was a bunch in winning 13-2 in six innings.

Holy Names jumped on HPU starter Alexa McCoin, with a single, her own throwing error, an RBI single by Clavelle, a walk and an RBI single Devi Coglio for a 2-0 lead. Shark reliever Gabriella Nowak came in to get a double play and a ground out to end the inning.

The Sharks would even the game in the third, as Sienna Santiago bunted for a single to lead off and was sacrificed to second. Sanchez singled and Leonard followed with a 2-RBI double to left center. Leonard got to third, but ended the inning getting caught in a rundown as HPU attempted a double steal.

In the fourth inning, HPU added three more runs. Toyama reached on a dropped popup at short, and Mari Kajiwara singled move Toyama to second. Santiago bunted to move the runners, but HNU first baseman Nicolette Soares airmailed the throw to the bag, allowing Toyama to score. Sierra Dias tripled to right center to drive in Kajiwara and Santiago for a 5-2 HPU advantage.

In the fifth, Nicole Viena got a one out triple and Toyama reached on an error. After Toyama stole second, Kajiwara laced a 2-RBI single through the left side to put HPU up 7-2.

The Sharks cashed the game in the sixth, with a Dias walk followed by the Sanchez triple to right center. Leonard walked before Boyer rapped an RBI single through the right side. Viena singled to load the bases for Toyama. The senior, who had never hit a home run in her HPU career, fouled off her first pitch and blasted the second over the center field fence for a 13-2 lead.

Nowak (2-1), a senior from Torrance, Calif./North, got the win in relief with five shutout innings with a strikeout and allowing five hits. Jordan Curry finished the game pitching the seventh with two strikeouts and a walk.

HPU's Anekaila Crevani (0-7) picked up the loss, allowing eight hits and seven runs (two earned) in five innings.
