WAIPAHU, Hawai'i -- Hawai'i Pacific University made it two in a row with a 5-0 PacWest Conference victory over Fresno Pacific Friday night at Hans L'Orange Park.

Following an hour and a half delay because of a heavy rain pregame, the Sharks (16-24, 6-22) jumped out in front with a four-run first inning to keep the Sunbirds (13-18, 10-12) at bay.

Junior first baseman
Wyatt Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park had another outstanding night at the plate, leading the Sharks by going 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple to gather two RBIs and two runs scored.

Senior lefthander
Matthew Gunter (5-4) of Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista got the win, going eight innings, striking out seven while issuing five hits and a walk. Junior righthander Billy Clemens of Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol pitched a perfect ninth with one strikeout.

The Sharks pounced on Fresno Pacific righthanded starter Jonathan Molina from the get go. Leadoff man
Tanner Tokunaga collected a leadoff walk from Molina, and
Ryan Torres-Torioka followed with a single up the middle. Hoppie then ripped an 0-1 pitch to the fence in right center for a 2-RBI triple. He came home on
Jordan Mopas' sacrifice fly.
Robert Fram and
Matthew Tsutomi both singled with two out and advanced a base on a wild pitch.
Austin Inabata grounded to third only to reach on an error that scored Fram, but Tsutomi got caught in a rundown trying to score that ended the inning with HPU up 4-0.

Fresno Pacific had a threat in the third inning when the Sunbirds loaded the bases on a hit batsman, single and walk with one out, but Gunter shut down FPU with a strike out and pop up. The Sharks also left the bases loaded with one out and didn't score in the bottom of the third.

HPU added its final run in the fifth when Hoppie opened the inning with a single to left center, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out. FPU reliever Nic Garcia's ball four pitch to Tsutomi was wild to catcher Bryan Bucher and Hoppie came home for the 5-0 lead. While the Sharks could have added more insurance, HPU left the bases loaded.

HPU threatened again in the seventh, but had runners gunned down at the plate. The first trying to score after an errant throw to first and the second after a pitch in the dirt that didn't quite go far enough to allow a run to score.

FPU had single runners get to second in the sixth and seventh innings, but Gunter shut down the Sunbirds from advancing them farther.

The teams conclude their series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
