Sharks drop one game and ties second with No. 13 Dixie State

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i -- Hawai'i Pacific University dropped the first game of a PacWest Conference doubleheader with No. 13 Dixie State 5-2, but got a fifth inning leadoff home run by Mitchell Bumann to force an 8-8 tie in the second game.

The Sharks (17-28-1, 7-26-1) and the Trailblazers (31-10-1, 20-7-1) were playing the makeup twin bill from Friday that was rained out. The final game had a travel curfew and could only go five of the scheduled seven innings before reaching the designated time.

Bumann, the junior third baseman from Corona, Calif./Temescal Canyon, was 2-for-2 in the second game with two runs scored, the RBI and a walk. Sophomore centerfielder Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City was 4-for-4 in the second game.

The first game was tight until HPU gave up two runs in the ninth to the Trailblazers.

The Sharks are open until their final series on May 6-7 against Hawai'i-Hilo. The teams will play a pair of doubleheaders, with the Saturday, May 6, double dip designated as Military Appreciation Day with a 2 p.m. first pitch.

Game One

The Sharks took an early lead, but single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings allowed Dixie State to take control of the contest that DSU won 5-2.

The Sharks drew first blood in the third inning after Tokunaga walked on four straight pitches to lead off the inning. Ryan Torres-Torioka singled and Wyatt Hoppie laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third. Designated hitter Will Leskovic lofted an RBI sacrifice fly to score Tokunaga for the first run of the game.

But Dixie came back with a tally of their own in the top of the fourth, leading off the inning with back-to-back singles, followed by a sacrifice bunt and catcher Jake Davison lining out to center for an RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game.

The Trailblazers got the lead in the fifth on an unearned run as DH Wyatt Branch singled to right to start the inning, the moved to second and third on consecutive passed balls. After a walk, Branch scored when Tyler Baker sent a one-hopper to first but the Sharks could only get the lead runner on a double play attempt.

In the sixth DSU upped the lead to 3-1 on another unearned run as Tyler Mildenberg reached on error when shortstop Matthew Tsutomi slipped trying to pivot for a throw and fell down. Mildenberg was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an outfield single.

HPU got a run back in the seventh, as Froy Smith opened the inning with a double to center and moved to third on a groundout. Keola Himan picked up an RBI single to left to score Smith and make it 3-2, but was stranded.

In the ninth inning, DSU got to reliever Billy Clemens, with a leadoff single that scored on Trey Kamachi's one out single for the first insurance run. After setting up a double play with an intentional walk and replacing Clemens with Jordan Knoll, Shark catcher Robert Fram tried to pickoff Kamachi at second but threw the ball into center field allowing Kamachi to go to third. He scored an unearned run on a single by Mildenberg.

Blake Flint (3-7) took the loss for HPU allowing two runs (one earned) in 5.0 innings with six hits and three strikeouts. Clemens allowed three runs (one earned) in his 3.1 innings with six hits and a strikeout.

Game Two

The series finale was a wild one, with the two team combining for 16 runs on 23 hits with one error, and settling for an 8-8 tie that took two hours and 23 minutes to play five innings.

Both teams posted five-run innings and both lost leads before settling for the tie.

HPU jumped out in front in the first after Tokunaga led off with a single and worked his way to score on Fram's RBI single.

DSU tied the game in the top of the second with a one out bases-loaded RBI walk to Trey Reineke that scored designated hitter Jerome Hill II who singled earlier.

The Sharks answered back by plating five runs in the bottom of the second, all with two out. Bumann walked between line drive out to center and left. Tokunaga smacked a triple just inside the right field line for one run, and Torres-Torioka followed with a triple to center field for another run. First baseman Codi Santana walked and Hoppie popped up to second, but the wind drifted the ball and it bounced off Drew McLaughlin's glove in shallow center to allow Torres-Torioka to score and Santana move to third as Hoppie got to second on the play. Fram ripped a solid two RBI single to center and the Sharks led 6-1.

But just for a bit, as No. 13 Dixie retaliated with five runs of their own to tie the affair in the top of the third. After a leadoff walk and ground out, Logan Porter picked up one on an RBI single. Another single had two on for Hill to double in and drive starter Tyler Van Stone from the game. Catcher Reece Lucero chalked up an RBI single and McLaughlin finished the scoring for the inning with an RBI single of his own.

DSU broke the tie in the fourth with a Mildenberg RBI triple for one run and a Hill RBI single for a second to claim an 8-6 advantage.

HPU chipped back for one run in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single by Santana off of Trailblazer reliever Preston Hannay. Santana moved to second on a wild pitch and Fram doubled him home with a sharp shot just inside the bag at third and down the left field line for an 8-7 lead.

HPU held the Blazers scoreless in the top of the fifth, as McLaughlin got a one out single, but was picked off by Fram. DSU got two on via walk, but a groundout ended the inning.

The Sharks got leadoff heroics from Bumann for the second straight day, as he crushed a 1-0 pitch into the trees in left field for his team-leading fourth home run of the season and tied the game at 8-8. After a strikeout, Tokunaga ripped a double into left, but was erased trying to go to third on Torres-Torioka's grounder to short. A strikeout by Santana ended the inning and the game as the clock had passed 5 p.m., the agreed upon travel curfew.

Because of the tie, no pitchers received a decision as both starters, Van Stone for HPU and Sean Hardman of Dixie, taken off the hook.
