WAIPAHU, Hawai'i -- Hawai'i Pacific University got an eighth inning home run from
Mitchell Bumann and an outstanding pitching performance from
Matthew Gunter to split a PacWest doubleheader with No. 13 Dixie State on Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (17-27, 7-25) beat the No. 13 Trailblazers (30-10, 19-7) 2-1 in the second game after falling to DSU 11-4 in the first game.
Junior infielder
Mitchell Bumann of Corona, Calif./Temescal Canyon hit a two-run home run to left field to give the Sharks a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth after the Trailblazers got on the board in the top of the eighth.
Gunter, the lefthanded senior from Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista, went the distance allowing one run on seven hits while striking out 10 and giving up four walks (two intentional). With his 10 Ks, Gunter chalked up his 93rd strikeout of the season to set a new single-season school strikeout record, passing the 87 set by
Rico Garcia in the 2015 season.
In game one, Dixie State scored five runs in the top of the first inning to take control and never let up in picking up the 11-4 win. HPU got a 3-for-5 performance from junior designated hitter
Codi Santana of Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS.
The Sharks and Trailblazers will conclude their series on Sunday when they play a doubleheader to makeup their rained out twinbill from Friday. The first pitch is set for 11 a.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader was an old fashioned pitcher's duel that was settled in the eighth inning.
While Gunter was on fire through the first seven innings, Dixie State's Mason Hilty might have been as crafty, allowing just three hits with no walks through seven innings. Gunter entered the eighth allowing five hits.
Gunter got the first two Trailblazers out in the top of the eighth before facing Trey Kamachi who sent a 2-2 pitch to the left center field fence for a standup double. After an intentional walk to Logan Porter, the Trailblazers got a first pitch sharp chopper from Tyler Mildenberg for a seeing-eye single just under the glove of a diving Bumann up the middle to drive in Kamachi for the 1-0 DSU lead.
But the Sharks got to Hilty in the bottom of the eighth as
Keola Himan led off with a single through the right side of the infield on the first pitch. Bumann followed with a ball and a foul off before jacking a 1-1 delivery from Hilty into the trees beyond the left field fence for his third home run of the season to give HPU its first lead of the day at 2-1 to chase Hilty.
HPU got two more on base, but left them stranded.
Gunter finished by delivering a strikeout, a flyout and a soft liner for the win.
Hilty (8-2) lost for just the second time this season, going 7.0 innings and allowing the two runs on just five hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Jose Rosales-Rodarte gave up one hit with two strikeout in his inning of relief.
