LACEY, Wash. – Hawai'i Pacific University freshman
Lucas Libbra scored with 1:15 to play to give the Sharks a 3-2 road win over Saint Martin's on a rainy Sunday afternoon at SMU Field.
The Sharks (2-1-1) scored three goals over the last 40 minutes to overcome the Saints (0-5) two goal lead and upset bid.
The Sharks got down early when the Saints scored in the 22nd minute when SMU's Mamadou Leigh put in a header on a free kick from Sebastian Navarro for a 1-0 advantage.
The Saints put HPU behind an eight-ball four-and-a half minutes into the second half as Navarro's pass across the box found an open Brandon Madsen who buried the ball in the back right of the net for a 2-0 lead.
But the Sharks quickly answered and started a comeback. Just two minutes later in the 52nd minute, junior
Gerrit Arzberger of Munich, Germany got a pass from sophomore
Zen Roten of Palos Verdes, Calif. in the middle of the box and blasted it in to pull HPU within a goal
In the 69th minute, senior
Josch Cuerten of Cologne, Germany tied the game at 2-all. Cuerten dribbled through multiple defenders to an open spot in the box before firing the one-timer.
The Sharks kept the pressure forward, and it paid off when Libbra, a freshman from Alata, France, got the ball in the middle of the box and powered it past Saint Martin's keeper Griffin Small.
The Sharks and Saints each tallied 13 shots, with HPU putting six on goal and Saint Martin's eight.
HPU senior goalkeeper
Daniel Arnoll of Verrieres-le-Buisson, France, posted six saves in the contest, while Small tallied three saves.
The Sharks continue their five-match road trip on Thursday when they open PacWest Conference play at Concordia Irvine. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. HST (4 p.m. PDT).
