HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University dropped its final match in the Hawai'i Challenge as No. 8 Lewis handed the Sharks a 3-1 Sunday evening at James Castle Gymnasium at St. Andrew's Priory.
The Sharks (1-3) fell to the Flyers (4-0) 15-25, 16-25, 25-20, 14-25.
"I'm very proud of how we played this tournament," said HPU head coach
Jenic Tumaneng. "Lewis is an outstanding team. They beat Nebraska-Kearney today and we were played them close early and took a set from them. This tournament has really shown us what we need to do to get to the next level."
The eighth ranked Flyers dominated the Sharks statistically. Lewis hit .298 for the match, while recording 13.0 blocks. HPU hit just .063 with one block.
Sophomore
Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico, led the way for the Sharks with seven kills, while sophomore
Kayla Demari of Dana Point, Calif./JSerra Catholic posted six kills. Senior
Lea Felton of Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis added five kills and joined freshman
Abigail Wilmington of Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River on HPU's only block.
Maddie Seliga recorded 14 kills for the Flyers with Elizabeth Hyland posting 12 kills. Alexandra Preuss led the block party with seven as Aly Schneider tallied six.
The Sharks trailed 2-0, but were determined to rally to open with a 6-1 run to open the third set. HPU expanded the lead to 12-4 and out to 19-8 before the nationally ranked Flyers responded. Still the Sharks held a 21-12 advantage, then had to hold on through a barrage to win 25-20.
The teams were close early in the fourth, tied a four when the Flyers went on a 7-1 run and never looked back.
HPU hits the road for the first time on the young season this week as the Sharks travel to Nampa, Idaho for the D2 West Region Showcase Thursday through Saturday. HPU meets Sonoma State on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Hawai'i Time for its first game in the classic.
