Sharks fall 2-1 to Stanislaus State on late goal

Box Score WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Stanislaus State's Khalil Kirksey intercepted a pass and turned it into the game winning goal as Hawai'i Pacific University fell 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Field 5.

The Sharks (1-1) dropped their first game of the season, while the Warriors (1-1-1) won their first game of the young year.

The tightly contested match saw all of the scoring in the second half.

Stanislaus drew the first score when Luis Hernandez scored on a direct kick following an HPU foul. Hernandez blasted the shot from 25 yards out in the 57th minute.

But the Sharks answered on the following kickoff as Mario Garcia worked the ball up field before passing to freshman forward Lucas Libbra of Alata, France who sent it into the back of the net just 22 seconds later.

The game-winner came in the 86th minute when Kirksey swiped a Shark pass deep offensive end and sent the one-timer into the goal.

HPU never got another shot in the final four-plus minutes of action.

The Sharks outshot Stanislaus 11-6, but Warrior goalkeeper Patrick Colombana stopped four of the five HPU shots on goal. Stanislaus recorded three shots on goal of their six, with two scores against HPU goalkeeper Daniel Arnoll of Verrieres-le-Buisson, France. Arnoll also notched a save.

The Sharks are off until next weekend when they visit Concordia Portland on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. HST.
