HONOLULU – The Hawai'i Pacific University Athletic Department is proud to announce the three individuals and the team that form the seventh class of the Hawai'i Pacific Athletic Hall of Fame presented by Wealth Strategy Partners. HPU will induct men's soccer player Cesar Jube, men's tennis player and former coach Stefan Pampulov, men's basketball player John Strickland and the 1990 NAIA National Champion volleyball team into the Hall that was started in the fall of 2011.
The induction ceremonies will take place at the 2018 S.H.A.R.X. Benefit on Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Hukilau in the Executive Center at 1088 Bishop.
"This is an exemplary group for our HPU Athletic Hall of Fame," said HPU Executive Director of Athletics
Vince Baldemor. "The Hall of Fame Committee once again selected a class of outstanding men and women who represent the finest student-athletes of our institution and our history."
Cesar Jube was the first soccer All-American at Hawai'i Pacific, and was twice named to the NAIA All-America team on his way to setting the HPU record of 52 career goals. The native of Brazil led the NAIA in scoring with his 28 goals and 60 points in 1996, setting HPU records that stand today. He led the HPU soccer team to a 17-2-1 record in 1996, the NAIA Far West Independent Championship and a berth in the NAIA Far West Regional, all firsts for the Sea Warriors.
Stefan Pampulov is being honored as both a player and as a coach at HPU. Pampulov played from 1999-2003, earning All-America honors in 2000. He played a key role in getting HPU to the NCAA Division II Championships where they finished as the national runners-up in 2000, 2001 and 2003. He served two seasons as an assistant coach at HPU, then became the head men's and women's coach in 2006. He led the Sea Warriors for six seasons and had both programs in the NCAA Division II Championships annually until stepping down in May 2011. Both the men and women advanced to the national semifinals during his tenure.
The late John Strickland was a two-time All-American that helped lead HPU to NAIA National Tournament appearances in 1994 and 1995. His play in his senior season at the NAIA Championships led him to being selected to the All-Tournament Team, despite HPU only advancing to the round of 16. His 805 points and 393 rebounds in his junior season of 1993-94 still remain single-season records today. His 1,597 career points were a record at the time that was later surpassed by teammate Llewellyn Smalley, but his 750 career rebounds share the HPU record with teammate James Williams.
The 1990 Volleyball Team won the first NAIA National Championship for Hawai'i Pacific University. Coach Nahaku Brown's Sea Warriors posted a 23-7 record on the way to the championship. After falling in the District 29 championship match, HPU received its third at-large bid into the NAIA Championships. The Sea Warriors did not drop a set through the quarterfinals. But they had to battle back from an 0-2 deficit to Western Washington in the semifinals to win in five. In the national championship match, HPU lost the opening set to Texas Wesleyan, then took the next three for the crown as Gaby Arigas took MVP honors.
